Kundli

Your kundli, calculated to the second of arc

Your janam kundli is the map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. JyotishiVani draws it in North or South Indian style, with the divisional charts, planet strength, yogas and doshas, and it tells you which parts your birth time can support.

Sample North Indian chart: houses fixed, Pisces lagna in the top centre 12 Su Me 1 Ke 2 3 4 Ma 5 6 Mo 7 Ra 8 Ju 9 10 11 Ve Sa
North Indian. Houses are fixed; the numbers are the signs. The lagna is always the top centre diamond.
Sample South Indian chart: signs fixed, lagna marked in Pisces Rasi D1 Ari Ke Tau Gem Can Ma Leo Vir Mo Lib Ra Sco Ju Sag Cap Aqu Ve Sa Pis Asc Su Me
South Indian. Signs are fixed, starting with Pisces at the top left; the lagna is marked.

The same real chart in both styles: Pune, 14 April 1995, 06:10 IST. Calculated by the app’s engine.

What the Kundli tab shows

Every planet with its sign and degree, its nakshatra and pada, its house, its dignity, and whether it is retrograde or combust. Here is the sample chart above:

Divisional charts

Each divisional chart (varga) divides every sign into finer parts and is read for one area of life. The finer the division, the more exact the birth time it needs. The app draws these, and locks a chart, with an explanation, when your birth time cannot support it.

ChartEach divisionRead for
D1 · Rasi30°The birth chart itself: body, life direction, everything at a glance
D2 · Hora15°Wealth (Parashara’s hora: every planet in Leo or Cancer)
D7 · Saptamsa4.29°Children and progeny
D9 · Navamsa3.33°Marriage, dharma, and the strength behind every planet
D10 · Dasamsa3°Career, status and public work
D12 · Dwadasamsa2.5°Parents and lineage
D60 · Shashtiamsa30′Past karma; needs a birth time exact to the minute

The D60 is not drawn in the app: it needs a birth time exact to the minute. The guide to divisional charts.

Planet strength, yogas and doshas

  • Shadbala, the six-fold strength of each planet, compared with its classical minimum, with the strongest planet and any below the minimum named.
  • Yogas present in your chart, each with its definition and the placements that form it. When none of the classical yogas checked is clearly present, the app says so: that is common, and says nothing bad about your chart. How common each yoga really is.
  • Doshas: Manglik and Kala Sarpa, with the definition used and any exceptions that apply, and your Sade Sati status. The Manglik guide.

What your birth time unlocks

When you add your birth details you say how sure you are of the time: exact, within about 15 minutes, about an hour, the part of the day, or unknown. The app works out which parts of your chart that uncertainty could change and marks them as uncertain. If you can find a more exact time later, add it, and the app shows how many more insights it unlocks. What each level of precision supports.

Learning to read it

New to kundlis? Start with how to read a kundli, step by step, then the 27 nakshatras and the Vimshottari dasha. Or ask Vani about any placement from the Kundli tab: “What does my Saturn in the 12th mean?”

Questions about kundlis

What is a kundli?

A kundali is the map of the sidereal zodiac at the moment and place of birth: the lagna (rising sign), the twelve houses counted from it, and the positions of the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu).

Can I make a kundli without my birth time?

Partly. The signs of the planets are known from the date alone (the Moon’s on a little over half of all days), but the lagna, the houses and the divisional charts need a birth time. JyotishiVani asks how sure you are of your time and shows only what that precision supports: dashas and Sade Sati need a time within about two hours; divisional charts, yogas and doshas need about fifteen minutes.

North or South Indian chart: which is better?

Neither: they show exactly the same information. The North Indian chart fixes the houses and writes the sign numbers in them; the South Indian chart fixes the signs and marks the lagna. Use the one you learnt to read. The app switches between them with one tap.

Why is my kundli different in another app?

Usually a different ayanamsa, birth time, time zone or house system. JyotishiVani uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, mean nodes, whole-sign houses and the historical time zone for your date and place. Set the same conventions in other software and the positions should agree to within seconds of arc. Nine reasons charts and readings differ.

Is my birth data private?

Birth details, names and messages are encrypted in the database, each account can only read its own rows, and you can delete a person, a conversation or your whole account at any time. Privacy policy.
